What is Terrestrial Laser Scanning?

Laser scanners measure the three-dimensional coordinates of an object surface automatically, in a systematic manner, at high-speed and in near-real time. Scanning is usually used to measure surfaces and record spatial relationships, rather than discrete lines and facets. It relies on having line of sight to the object, but you can perform and combine multiple scans to record a subject more fully. Laser instruments can work in conditions where lighting is poor and other surveys would not be practical, although good lighting may give better results.

What are the benefits of Scanning?

This technique gives you a set of coordinates often referred to as a pointcloud. You can use the point cloud data for:

  • Producing as-built BIM models
  • Generating solid mesh models for 3D visualisations
  • Assessing clash detection with design models
  • Facade verticality surveys
  • Calculating volumes and areas
  • Background imagery to conventional 3D vector surveys
  • Generating animations to help with visualisation
  • Data collection in environments where access is difficult or health and safety limits personnel entry.

Scanning surveys are carried out in combination with other survey methods. For example, we always control scanning using conventional survey methods. These can further be augmented using techniques such as terrestrial or aerial photogrammetry if required.

How do I commission a Laser Scan?
  • Commissioning a Laser Scan is not really any different than for a conventionally measured survey Scanning offers new, additional enhancements over traditional surveying techniques – it is best to decide upon these ahead of commissioning the survey.
  • For example our default is generally fully coloured scans externally and greyscale scans internally. This can be varied if there are specific areas of interest.
  • Another example may include scanning above an exposed ceiling tile. This may offer additional information on structural details. This needs to be considered at commission stage.
  • Our default scan resolutions result in point spacing intervals at about 12mm at 10m distance from the scan setup. This generates vast amounts of data and yet we can capture more !
  • Our scanners can capture points at 1.5mm spacing at 10m range – this may occasionally be specified particularly where detailing areas of heritage interest.

Is Scale Important?

Certainly. Scale is a proportion used in determining the dimensional relationship of a feature to that which it represents. Misunderstanding the meaning of scale and its application to the survey can result in products which do not meet the anticipated need. An expression of scale is a simple way of defining the overall content and accuracy of a survey. Understanding how to use scale enables a survey to be specified easily, producing the required amount of detail to the desired accuracy, without needing to understand all the processes involved. If you are tasked with specifying and commissioning surveys then an appreciation of scale will help provide the detail you require.

What about Accuracy and Precision?

Accuracy is the nearness of a measurement to its true value.
Precision is the consistency of a group of measurements.
Discrepancy is the difference between two measured values of the same quantity.
All engineering activity needs a given level of accuracy: too much can be expensive, too little can be disastrous. The skill of surveying is in deciding just what level of accuracy is needed for any particular task and then building a methodology to ensure that it is reached. It’s a question of risk. A low price could well represent value for money, or that the surveyor is not being considered on a like for like basis. Survey is the foundation of design and construction, so the knock- on effects of errors could be costs, delays and litigation further down the line.
